"On a bended knee is no way to be free"
Movie Synopsis
Christopher McCandless, the main character of the film Into the Wild, leaves modern day to society for a life in nature. He constantly moves around from place to place quite similarly to Thoreau's reasoning as to why he left Walden pond. Thoreau said that his life art Walden had become too routine; He was living in the same rut and he needed to find a new path of life to follow for awhile. On his journeys he epitomizes the transcendental ideals. He starts off by abandoning his car and burning any cash he has. He proceeds to live off the land. He meets a few people along the way who he interacts with, has his time with them, and moves on. He has one experience in a city where he leaves almost immediately. He favors nature over urban places just as the transcendentalists did. Chris moves from the Southwest of America to the Pacific Crest Trail to Mexico back to California in the Redwoods, and finally up through Canada where he ends up in Alaska. Once in Alsaka he simply lives in nature.
Making of the Movie
Sean Penn was the director of this movie and made obvious choices of camera angles and background music which give a very natural feel to the film. The camera views have a mesh of close ups of ice forrming, or flowers growing, and views which pan out to show the mountains and valleys of nature overwhich Chris travels over. Examples can be seen in the above video. Musically, the entire soundtrack was done by Eddie Veddar. The song "Guaranteed" is heard in the above video. All of the music has a very simple sound to it; the songs are all acoustic and vocals. This simplicity gives a very natural feel in comparison to the techno, or rap which would give off a more modern, urban feel.
